Welcome to the March edition of the Pistoia Alliance AI Newsletter.
Register to attend a new webinar “How Important is Subject Matter Expertise in Life Sciences When Using Technology and Artificial Intelligence?” by Joe Mullen, Director of Technical Consultants, SciBite. This event sponsored by SciBite will take place on March 29th at 10 am EST (7 am PST; 3 pm London).
With recent developments in technology, and the accessibility of artificial intelligence models, one must consider the importance of subject matter expertise in ensuring these are used in the most applicable and accurate settings. Further highlighted during a recent well-documented chatbot unveiling, even incredibly well funded efforts can provide factual errors that will only be spotted by such experts. This expert input is even more important in the highly ambiguous, synonymous and complex domain of life sciences. Here, we cover the importance of such expertise in the development, fine-tuning as well as application of, technologies, including artificial intelligence, in the life sciences – also touching on how these can impact end users.
We feature a panel discussion by the group of distinguished industry leaders: Prashant Natarajan, General Manager, Health & Life Sciences, H2O.ai; Bikalpa Neupane, PhD, Director, Advanced Technologies & Experimentation, Takeda; Christophe Chabbert, PhD, Senior Scientist, Discovery Informatics, Roche; and Natalja Kurbatova, PhD, Lead Scientist, Zifo R&D. Our team conducted in-depth business analysis of the use of AI in the pharmaceutical enterprise, and identified common use cases, challenges, and best practices for application of AI, specific to particular personas. This webinar presents the interim report of the results to-date, followed by the panel discussion by the members of the Pistoia Alliance GMLP CoI.
View the recording of joint webinar by the Pistoia Alliance FAIR Assay Annotation project (a.k.a. "DataFAIRy") and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) on the matters of FAIR assay annotation. This event was held on February 16th. The live presentation was limited to the NIH participants, but the recording is publicly available, according to the agreement with the NIEHS. The objective was to exchange ideas and to brainstorm the future collaboration opportunities between the Pistoia Alliance and the NIH.
Last but not the least, a reminder to join us at the 2023 Pistoia Alliance Annual Spring Conference in London on April 18th which includes a panel discussion where Accenture will be unveiling highlights from new research among top global biopharma leaders supported by the Pistoia Alliance, exploring the use of AI, 'omics' and real world data.
Please have a look at this perspective from the Science magazine: “The growing influence of industry in AI research” This paper makes a rather pessimistic conclusion that due to increasing growth of AI in private industry “public interest alternatives for important AI tools may become increasingly scarce”. In May of this year, we plan a webinar about industry initiatives that can undo this trend. Stay tuned!
As always, please get in touch.
Best wishes,
